Carpe College! by Mike Metzler

Carpe College! is an idea. An approach. An M.O. A habit. A way of embracing everything college life throws your way – academics and the rest – and doing so with vigor. …It’s also an exploration, a continual experiment, a series of tests and trials and the dipping of many toes into many different waters in an attempt to uncover who you are and how you fit… with others… with the world at large… with your own notion of who you’d like to become.…

It encompasses both the LEARNING and the LIVING parts of college, never easy to separate, but we’ll do so for our purposes. We’ll explore strategies and stories that encourage you to actively and intentionally seek success in all facets of the experience”–http://carpecollege.com

Gods of Earth, by Craig DeLancey

“Thousands of years after a war against the gods drove humanity nearly extinct, something divine stirs. It awakens the Guardian, an ancient being pledged to destroy the gods—a task it believes long-accomplished. Through deep caverns, he makes his way to the desolate surface of Earth and stalks toward the last human settlements, seeking the source of this strange power.

Far away, the orphan witch child Chance Kyrien is turning seventeen: today he will be confirmed as a Puriman and learn what stake in the family’s vineyard his adopted father will give him. Ambitious, rebellious, but fiercely devout, Chance dreams only of being a farmer and winemaker, and marrying the girl he loves, the Puriman Ranger Sarah Michaels.

But a shocking cataclysm of violence and destruction turns Chance’s peaceful world upside down. Aided by his loyal friends and the Guardian, Chance must travel through time and space to battle the last remaining god. For the destinies of Chance and this final deity are fatally intertwined, and only one of them can survive.”– http://www.craigdelancey.com

Seneca Falls Inheritance, by Miriam Grace Monfredo

Miriam Grace Monfredo has published a new edition of her Seneca Falls mystery series, in print and in Kindle format.  The first, pictured above, is Seneca Falls Inheritance, where shy librarian Glynis Tryon is forced out of her quiet comfort zone to solve the murder of her library’s most generous trustee.
The setting, Seneca Falls in 1848, is a fascinating combination of places familiar to many Finger Lakes area residents, salted with historical information about sports, the daily life of a professional woman, and 19th century women’s legal status that is new to us.  As it happens, Glynis is trying to help her friend Elizabeth Cady Stanton organize a Woman’s Rights Convention, and it seems Mrs. Stanton may have something to do with the mystery, too.
Miriam Grace Monfredo will appear at the Local Author Book Fair at the Fairport Public Library, 1 Fairport Village Landing, on Saturday, December 7, 2013, from 2 to 4 PM.

Welcoming All Friends, by June Ebersold

Welcoming All Friends joins the popular genre of first-day-of-school picture books.  Watching shy Jenna make friends on her first day of school, sharp-eyed children will realize that Jenna’s mother is right:  new friends see Jenna, not just her wheelchair.  The read-aloud text is all about Jenna and her friends—a regular “first-day-of-school” story.   The pictures show other children with several kinds of handicaps and the accommodations available to make them successful.   This picture book might be used by parents or teachers preparing children for today’s heterogeneous classrooms.

Wages of Sin, by George La Vigne and Jamie Campbell

Wages of Sin is blood-and-thunder fiction, fast action from beginning to end. Aaron and Colin, one a prosecuting attorney and the other a cop, take personal responsibility for avenging the death of their father, who got killed when he accidentally witnessed a violent robbery. And then they take on another issue of potentially wider effect…

The authors use brief quotations from famous sources to highlight the moral dilemmas at the root of the plot. There’s plenty here to discuss, and the authors provide their e-mail addresses for those who would like to respond—positively or negatively.

George La Vigne  will appear at the Local Author Book Fair at the Fairport Public Library, 1 Fairport Village Landing, on Saturday, December 7, 2013, from 2 to 4 PM.

Mothering, an Art of the Heart: Nine Moms with Forty-Three Children Share Their Reflections from the Empty Nest

In the opening essay, the authors of Mothering, an Art of the Heart, speak of wanting to share the wisdom they learned in their years of child-rearing.  However, the book also reads as a warm recognition for the work all mothers do, a comfort when it seems that no one else understands anymore.  Topics range from enjoying family life to teaching values and fostering faith.

Read ‘em like peanuts—a handful now and then, when you’re tired or discouraged.

A gift of wisdom or encouragement for mothers of all ages.

Pittsford, by Audrey Maxfield Johnson and Vicki Masters Profitt

Pittsford, by Audrey Maxfield Johnson and Vicki Masters ProfittPittsford, from the Arcadia Press “Images of America” series,  features some 200 vintage photographs of Pittsford (both Town and Village) captioned in detail by Audrey Maxfield Johnson, Pittsford Town Historian, and Vicki Profitt, Perinton Historical Society Museum Director.  This is an overview, from the Earliest Residents to the Twentieth Century, showing how the early families continued to contribute to the life of Pittsford from the 1780’s through the 20th century.
