Seneca Falls Inheritance, by Miriam Grace Monfredo

Miriam Grace Monfredo has published a new edition of her Seneca Falls mystery series, in print and in Kindle format.  The first, pictured above, is Seneca Falls Inheritance, where shy librarian Glynis Tryon is forced out of her quiet comfort zone to solve the murder of her library’s most generous trustee.

The setting, Seneca Falls in 1848, is a fascinating combination of places familiar to many Finger Lakes area residents, salted with historical information about sports, the daily life of a professional woman, and 19th century women’s legal status that is new to us.  As it happens, Glynis is trying to help her friend Elizabeth Cady Stanton organize a Woman’s Rights Convention, and it seems Mrs. Stanton may have something to do with the mystery, too.

Welcoming All Friends joins the popular genre of first-day-of-school picture books.  Watching shy Jenna make friends on her first day of school, sharp-eyed children will realize that Jenna’s mother is right:  new friends see Jenna, not just her wheelchair.  The read-aloud text is all about Jenna and her friends—a regular “first-day-of-school” story.   The pictures show other children with several kinds of handicaps and the accommodations available to make them successful.   This picture book might be used by parents or teachers preparing children for today’s heterogeneous classrooms.

Wages of Sin is blood-and-thunder fiction, fast action from beginning to end. Aaron and Colin, one a prosecuting attorney and the other a cop, take personal responsibility for avenging the death of their father, who got killed when he accidentally witnessed a violent robbery. And then they take on another issue of potentially wider effect…

The authors use brief quotations from famous sources to highlight the moral dilemmas at the root of the plot. There’s plenty here to discuss, and the authors provide their e-mail addresses for those who would like to respond—positively or negatively.

Irish America Reawakening: the Eoin McKiernan Story, by Deirdre McKiernan Hetzler

Eoin McKiernan had an “Irish childhood” in New York State, because all the towns where he lived were filled with new Irish immigrants.  He was able to spend summers in Ireland, with his Irish grandmother, deepening his connection with the old country.  He married an Irish-American girl he had met at Gaelic school in New York City.  He taught English at SUNY Geneseo and then at St. Thomas College in St. Paul, MN.  It was his life work to rebuild the ties between Irish-Americans and the language and culture of Ireland.

Pittsford, by Audrey Maxfield Johnson and Vicki Masters Profitt

Pittsford, from the Arcadia Press “Images of America” series,  features some 200 vintage photographs of Pittsford (both Town and Village) captioned in detail by Audrey Maxfield Johnson, Pittsford Town Historian, and Vicki Profitt, Perinton Historical Society Museum Director.  This is an overview, from the Earliest Residents to the Twentieth Century, showing how the early families continued to contribute to the life of Pittsford from the 1780’s through the 20th century. Of particular interest is the chapter on Commerce and Agriculture, featuring photographs of the labors and equipment on the Hopkins Farm, in operation since 1860. While methods, and some crops, have changed, some of the century-old equipment is still in use and the farm is still in the family.
